Welcome to MLK – Making Life Known. By accessing this website, submitting an application, joining our waitlist, or residing in one of our homes, you agree to the following Terms & Conditions and Community Living Guidelines.
These guidelines exist to ensure every MLK home remains peaceful, respectful, and safe for all residents.

1. Housing Services Provided
MLK – Making Life Known provides independent shared housing only.
We offer shared room rentals in community-based homes for adults who are able to live independently.
We do not provide:
• Medical care
• Personal care
• Assisted living services
• Supervision services
• Medication management
Residents who receive outside services, or other support services, are solely responsible for arranging and managing those services independently.

2. No Guarantee of Placement
Submitting an application or joining the waitlist does not guarantee housing placement. Housing is offered based on availability and applicant screening in accordance with fair housing laws.

3. Independent Care Arrangements
MLK – Making Life Known does not employ, coordinate, or supervise caregivers or service providers. Any caregiving or support services are arranged strictly between the resident and their chosen provider.

4. Community Respect & Conduct
Residents are expected to treat one another with respect, kindness, and consideration. Harassment, threats, violence, or discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated.
Our homes are built on dignity, peace, and mutual respect.

5. Quiet Hours & Music
Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM.
• Music, television, and phone audio must be kept at a respectful volume
• Headphones are encouraged in shared spaces
• Loud or disruptive noise is not permitted at any time

6. Cleanliness & Personal Hygiene
Residents must maintain good personal hygiene and clean shared spaces after use.
• Shower regularly and wear clean clothing
• Dispose of personal waste properly
• Clean kitchen and bathroom areas after each use
• Do not leave personal items in shared areas
​
7. Personal Belongings & Storage
• Personal items must be stored in assigned bedrooms or designated storage areas
• Shared areas should remain free of clutter
• MLK – Making Life Known is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings

8. Kitchen & Shared Space Use
• Clean dishes, counters, and appliances after each use
• Label personal food items when needed
• Respect shared refrigerator and pantry space

9. Laundry Room Use
To maintain cleanliness and avoid clothing mix-ups:
• Laundry facilities are for resident use only
• Excessive or continuous use of laundry machines is not permitted
• Laundry access may be scheduled or managed by the house manager
• Residents must remove clothing promptly after washing or drying
• MLK – Making Life Known is not responsible for lost, damaged, or mixed clothing

10. Utilities & Appliance Use
Residents must conserve water and electricity.
The following items are not permitted in MLK homes:
• Space heaters
• Heating blankets
• Hot plates or cooking devices in bedrooms
• Mini fridges or freezers in bedrooms
• Unapproved high-wattage appliances
Excessive use of water or electricity may result in corrective monetary action.

11. Fire Safety
For safety and property protection:
• Candles, incense, open flames, or fire-producing items are not permitted
• Emergency exits must remain clear
• Fire safety equipment must not be tampered with
• Safety concerns must be reported promptly

12. Visitor & Guest Policy
Visiting hours are 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM.
• Guests must respect house rules
• Residents are fully responsible for their visitors
• Overnight guests require prior approval
• Disruptive visitors may result in loss of guest privileges

13. No Drugs or Alcohol
No drugs or alcohol may be used, stored, sold, or consumed inside or around MLK – Making Life Known homes or property.
Violation of this policy may result in immediate termination of residency.
MLK homes are maintained as sober-safe environments.

14. Respect for Neighbors
Residents must respect neighbors and the surrounding community.
• No loud gatherings
• No loitering outside the property
• No disturbances or harassment of neighbors

15. Rent & Online Payment Policy
• Monthly rent is $1,000 per month unless otherwise stated in a written rental agreement
• Rent includes housing and standard utilities
• Rent is due on the agreed-upon date each month
All rent and housing payments must be made online through the MLK – Making Life Known website or approved electronic payment methods.
• Cash payments are not accepted
• Any external or alternative payment arrangement must be approved in advance
• Non-standard payment agreements must be documented and signed in writing by all parties

16. Application & Background Check Fees
• There is no fee to submit a housing application or join the waitlist
• MLK – Making Life Known may require a background check during screening
• If required, the applicant must pay the background check fee through the MLK website
• Background check fees are non-refundable once submitted

17. Notice to Vacate
Residency operates on a month-to-month basis unless otherwise agreed in writing.
• Residents must provide written notice as outlined in their rental agreement
• Failure to provide proper notice may result in prepaid rent being applied toward unpaid housing costs in accordance with California law
​
18. No Care Services Clause
MLK – Making Life Known provides housing only.
We do not employ, supervise, coordinate, or provide caregiving or medical services.
All support services are arranged solely by the resident.

19. Brand, Logo & Content Ownership
All logos, images, graphics, designs, house names, slogans, and written content displayed on this website — including:
• MLK – Making Life Known
• Follow The Dream
• Serenity House
• Haven House
are the property of MLK – Making Life Known and may not be copied, reproduced, or used without written permission.

20. Use of Historical MLK References
MLK – Making Life Known is an independent housing brand inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Martin Luther King Jr. Estate or related organizations.
Any historical quotations or images are used for inspirational and educational purposes only.
MLK – Making Life Known does not claim ownership of historical photographs, archival footage, or public-domain speech material.

21. Privacy & Personal Information
All personal information entered on this website is kept private and confidential.
• MLK – Making Life Known does not sell, share, or distribute personal information to third parties
• Information is used only for housing communication and screening
• Personal data is stored securely and accessed only by MLK housing administration
